MOLDOVA
MOLDOVA is a small country found between Romania and the Ukraine. It
had a population of some 4.4 million people. Now almost 25% of the
population have become economic migrants. On May 2nd 1992 Moldova
joined the UN. The capital is Chisinau and languages spoken are
Romainian (Moldovan dialect), and Russian. Outside the main cities the
villages are largely without sanitation and running water. The
countryside is a rolling Steppe type.
THE PEOPLE
The poverty of Moldova is through no fault of the people. They are
always hard working as a study into migrant workers discovered.
THE LINKS BETWEEN MOLDOVAN COMMUNITIES ABROAD AND THE REPUBLIC OF
MOLDOVA
The research analyzed the strengths and the weaknesses of Moldovan
Communities Abroad (MCAs). The main strengths of MCAs pointed out were
the image of Moldovans as adaptive, reliable and motivated workers, the
organic nature of their link with the homeland, and the active role of
the church.
